Interview tips

Preparation

Interviews are an opportunity for the employer to find out more about you and if you are a suitable candidate for the position, but it is also an opportunity for you to find out more about the organisation and the role. Make sure your can talk confidently about your skills, qualifications and experience that are detailed in your CV.

Do your homework

Find out as much as possible about the organisation prior to the interview. A good starting point is having a look at their website to find out about the products / services they offer, locations etc. You should also learn the name and status of your interviewer.

Appearance

Your MHR consultant will give you advice on the dress code for the interview; however it is always best to look smart and groomed. Remember, first impressions last!

Travel and Timing

It is essential to plan your journey in advance to ensure that you are punctual. Allow for possible travel delays and just in case of a major hold up, make sure you have your contact's phone number if you suspect you will be late.

Questions

You should think about answers to typical interview questions before hand. For example, what can you bring to our company? Why do you wish to move? Tell me about your achievements, strengths, weaknesses? Prepare some questions to ask the interviewer. It is a good idea to have several prepared, perhaps regarding the position and your prospects. Salary and benefits discussions are best left until a second interview or when a job offer is made.

The interview

Interviews come in many forms - panel, one to one, group, telephone etc. Ask your MHR consultant which type of interview you will be having. You may also be asked to take tests, such as aptitude or psychometric tests. Each interviewer will have their own style. Some will fire direct questions at you while others will start with more open questions like, 'tell me about yourself'. The majority of interviewers will be somewhere in between, so be prepared to answer both types of questions.
