Third of Employees use Company Email Inappropriately
Hr Network Scotland has published that an ongoing study by SharePoint revealed over a third of their email users admitted to using company email inappropriately. The term ‘Inappropriately’ was defined by the respondents as using email to send funny images, organise social events and gossip to colleagues.
A few respondents admitted to flirting with colleagues via email and one person even used their work email to send a nude picture of themselves to another employee.
If you read through the company handbook of most organisations you will likely find it stated that email is not to be used for any other purpose than for work. However, most companies seem to allow a little slack in this area.
Ok so sending someone a naked picture of yourself at work is not something we would recommend and would most likely result in disciplinary action, termination of your contract or even a sexual harassment charge! But in fact many Managers/Directors/Partners have been known to personally send round the odd ‘Friday funny’ email.
We would like to know what your view on this is matter. Is using your work email to communicate with colleagues about non-work related matters unprofessional and a waste of a company’s time and resources? Or does extra curricular communication between colleagues help to foster stronger working relationships?
