Today the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service's (SNBTS) mobile blood bank paid a visit to our offices in East Kilbride to take blood donations and some of the Margaret Hodge recruitment team were brave enough to contribute.
The SNBTS do extremely valuable work, and donating blood has never been more important at a time when advances in medical science and greater resources going into healthcare are increasing the number of treatments that may require donated blood, for example cancer treatment, heart surgery and hip replacements.
Actually blood usage per operation has reduced greatly over the years, as better surgical techniques and improved understanding of blood clotting have made surgery safer. However, the sheer number of people who need medical and surgical treatment means that SNBTS must collect around a thousand donations daily to keep Scotland supplied.
We are posting this on our website to try to encourage more people to go and give blood. We hope these pictures of our team still smiling while donating will help ease your mind that donating blood is not a big ordeal (and yes we were a bit nervous before hand). So please contact SNBTS for more information about how and where you can donate: http://www.scotblood.co.uk/where-to-donate
