Employers Using Facebook to Assess Candidates

There was a discussion on Linked In recently about whether recruiters should use Facebook as a means for gathering information about candidates, and therefore as a means of assessing their suitability.

Using Facbook to Assess CandidatesMany Recruiters and HR Professionals stepped forward to say that they felt this was highly unethical and inappropriate (because Facebook is about expressing yourself in a personal manner not connected with how you behave professionally).

However, many also admitted it is a practice that does go on, and if the information is available for all to see then candidates must accept the risk of their Facebook page influencing a prospective employer’s opinion of them.

Basically the point is to ensure you know what your privacy settings are and adjust them accordingly. As prospective job seekers you are more than entitled to a private life but if you want to keep it private you have to put certain safeguards in place.

So use your head and happy job hunting!
